Question
You've served on the knowledge management planning committee as a KM user. The committee is co-chaired by the CIO and a respected KM user. Now the COO asks if you'd like to co-chair the committee next year. "Sure," you say. Immediately you begin to think about what you should do to excel as co-chair. You know it could lead to a promotion to senior management. 1. What would your list include? Format: Your paper should be a minimum length of one page, double-spaced, with properly cited references.Explanation / Answer
To excel as co-chair of the committee next year I would begin by making the implementation of KM within our organization a strategic initiative. Implementation of KM is depended on the need for behavioral change and as such the first item or agenda on my list will be to involve all support groups.
Secondly I will press for an organizational change model so as to facilitate the shift to a knowledge-centered organization over time. The change model that I may use will be the Kotter’s 8-step of organizational change.
Thirdly I will create a compelling vision for transitioning to knowledge management. The vision and the mission will be communicated not only initially but also continually. The message will be tailored for each of the target audiences – technical teams, support staff, users and customers.
Fourthly I will focus on four main areas – knowledge creation, knowledge analysis and enrichment, information storage and retrieval and knowledge dissemination. Focus on these areas will help me achieve the following objectives – establishing a robust road map for KM implementation and measure, analysis of measurable data and using them as basis for improvements on their strengths and weaknesses.
