Virtue ethics is an important approach in normative ethics which places emphasizes on virtues and moral character. It is in contrast with the approach that places importance on rules and duties. There is difference between virtue ethics and consequentialism or deontology with focus on centrality of virtue within the theory (Watson 1990; Kawall 2009). Virtues are defined with yield good consequences. It is a combination of eudaimonia and important ancient Greek moral philosophy.
The idea of moral individualism and relativism emerged through the influence of of virtue ethics. There was a disintegration in moral education and a rise of relativism which caused the death of character which generated Greek common virtues, Renaissance erudition, conscience of protestants. The western civilization was influenced with internalization of positive ideals and power of responsibility and the self. Western civilization got influenced with purpose of knowledge and culture for molding character and increase of the human potential. The flaws in the human nature were overcome. The idea of Protestantism brought a mature self-mastery as compared to impulses, fantasies, and desires which are wayward.
Modern evolutionary psychology found its way with the attribute of human nature and evolutionary biology innate sense of fundamental dispositions and moral sense.
