One of the managers in your organization has come to you and asked that they be paid overtime for last week. The employee is concerned because their immediate supervisor is disputing the overtime claim. Following is the person’s work pattern for the week.
Monday = 10 hours Wednesday = 10 hours Friday = 5 hours
Tuesday = 10 hours Thursday = 10 hours
Answer the following questions based on the above situation:
The employee requests 8 hours of overtime (based on working 2 extra hours on 4 different days). What is your reply?
The supervisor wants to give 5 hours comp. time instead of overtime. If yours is a public sector organization, what is your reply?

It completely depends on the worktime contract of employee with employer, for instance if an employee have work contract to work 40 hours a week (considering 5 working days in a week) then ideally employee is required to work 8 hours daily from Monday to Friday. Considering the give scenario where employee worked for 10 hours from Monday to Thursday but worked only 5 hours on Friday. Which means effectively employee worked for 45 hours in a week. Thus the extra time under consideration is only 5 hours.
The supervisor wants to give 5 hours comp. time instead of overtime. If yours is a public sector or private organization, what is your reply?
Unless it’s explicitly mentioned in contract that how overtime will be compensated and based on which conditions and weather it can be a comp. or it has to be a payment against the overtime worked, then employee can avail either of the options. Supervisor is free to suggest the alternates and it’s up to employee to accept the suggested alternates.
It’s completely dependent on the work contract employee have with employer and compensation of overtime worked will have to done as per the contract may it be public sector or private sector.
Assume that if condition in contract says, employee should seek prior approval in writing from supervisor before working overtime, then if employee works without written approval then employer can deny the compensation.
