Question
Describe the role played by ATP in metabolism. What particular features of the structure of ATP allow it to fulfil these functions? (Hint: are a variety of enzymes able to use ATP? Is ATP relatively universal?) What do you know about energy drinks? The average person believes that energy drinks are primarily used by athletes to provide some "fuel" as they practice and compete. Other people use them more casually as a way to become more energized. When talking casually (or in the media), we say something gives us 'energy,' what does that mean? What is a biological definition of energy? A cellular definition of energy? Are your answers to (a) and (b) the same? Explain.Explanation / Answer
1. ATP is the energy currency of the cell. It plays role as energy source for so many metabolic reactions. Metabolic reactions require energy to make them finish and produce desired products. ATP acts as energy source. ATP synthase forms ATP by combining ADP and one inorganic phosphate (iP). When ATP releases one iP, to get converted in to its precursors, releases energy which can be used for a metabolic reaction. ATP is used as energy currency universally for all the metabolisms because of its high energy thus called universal energy currency.
- Energy drinks as the name suggests give instant energy. Athletes and people doing work outs need instant energy to get back to normal. These drinks contain electrolytes, sugar and caffein. They give temporary energy boost. In a long term, it is not suggested to use them as they have health hazards. They may become addictive because of caffein. You should not drink it during the exercise as they are diuretic. Body looses water through kidneys and through sweat leaving you dehydrated. Limited intake might be helpful after the exercises.
2. A. Something gives us energy. That could be anything. I feel its a sentence used when a person is morally boosted by a superior's words or an emotional support which we get from our friends or peers. That simply implies to the moral boost.
B. Biological definition of energy is, its a capacity to work or to perform an activity. We get this energy from burning the food that we eat. Outside also biofuels give renewable energy like heat energy etc. Cellular definition of energy means ATP. A series of metabolic reactions occur inside the cell resulting in both absorption and release of energy in the form of ATP. With this energy cells survive by that the whole organism.
C. No, both the energies are differrent. One is emotional energy and the other one is physical.
