Describe the process of defining a research problem and explore at least three research methods that might be used to resolve the problem. One research method must use a qualitative design and one research method must use a quantitative design. The third method is your choice. You will use a minimum of five references for this assignment, in addition to your textbook (Cooper, 2014). You should utilize California Southern University's Online Library and/or the Internet. Word count will be between 750-1000 words.

Explanation / Answer

Researching a problem is the first step towrads solving a process. The problem cannot be solved in a proper manner untill its nature and characteristics are not known. Hence just knowing the problem isn't enough for solving it. Rather proper study has to be made of the problem by following the steps of defining a research problem. The steps involved in defining a research problem could be understanding the problem from a general aspect, studying the nature of the problem, getting ideas and redefining the problem is if required for solving it.

The three methods that can be used to resolve a problem are

- case study- this is a qualitative method of research. It involves collecting cases of the nature on which the research is done and studying each case and their outcomes hence coming up with results that will help in making the research.

- ethnography- this method is again a qualitative method in which the researcher learns the culture of the group of people to understand and derive results. The culture may involve their lifestyle, attributes, values, languages etc. The researcher may even live with the people to understand the problem closely and minutely.

- correlational method- this is a quantitative method of research which studies the dataa in form of numbers and makes the research study. Statistical analysis is used to study the relationship between variables in this method. This method can be adopted if there is proper data available in numerical form to make the statistical table for the research.
