Injurious consumption is defined as consumption that has negative consequences for the long run well-being of the consumer. In another words, injurious consumption occurs when individuals or groups make consumption decisions that have negative consequences for their long-term well-being. What factors motivate some consumers to engage in such activities? Do marketers contribute to injurious consumption? If so to what extent are marketers responsible for injurious consumption involving their products? Should injurious products (e.g., alcohol, pharmaceuticals) be banned? What can social marketers do to reduce injurious consumption?
Explanation / Answer
People indulge in injurious consumption to satisfy their taste and needs. The satisfaction aspect of the consumer prevailed upon the health aspect.People also engage in these activities by peer pressure too like drugs. Marketers doesnot contribute much in injurious consumption because advertisement of these products are banned in most countries. Apart from advertisement, marketers try to influence the consumer behavior towards the product. Marketers goes for selective segmentation and targeting and during this process they tend to influence on the consumer psychology. These product cannot be banned because overdose and high level of consumption only bring health problem. Banning the product will also debar the people from exercising their freedom and right of consuming which is a larger human right.Social marketer through campaign can aware people about repurcation of these consumption and how negative it will impact the health of the consumer.
