Explanation / Answer

Democratic leadership style also called as shared leadership or participative leadership is a leadership style in which members are encouraged to participate in decision making process. Exchange of ideas happen freely and decisions are made through discussions. Though leader has the final say in decisions, he/she arrives at a decision only after consulting all the members.

Since the expertise and creativity of every individual in the group is being used, there is a higher probability to arrive at better decisions. No one can be a master at everything and so am I. So, I feel using the help of team members in making complex decisions is more fruitful.

Democratic leadership will lead to an open culture. Everyone will feel that they are valued and will give their best in achieving the goals and objectives of the organization.

A single leader cannot decide on changing the existing processes, especially if the processes involve a large number of employees of the company. In such situations, democratic leadership is really useful. Involving everyone in making decisions is a great way to please maximum number of people while not affecting the productivity of the company. So, this is an excellent leadership style which can help me in acting as a change agent.

In my previous company, top management decided to make the employees work on Saturdays too, to complete a project on time. However, they were doubtful about the impacts it would have on employee performance. When I came to know about this, I suggested our managers to involve everyone in the decision making process and explain them why we have to work on Saturdays. Finally a meeting was held and the decision was discussed openly. At the end of the meeting most of the people agreed to work on Saturdays on the condition of being paid extra for working overtime. In this way, democratic leadership played a great role in arriving at a crucial decision which involved everyone in the company.
