Name and explain at least four major considerations when building a group into an effective team.

Imagine that you are the team leader responsible for building a team of eight people who will design a new type of baby stroller with a built-in entertainment system that will allow the baby to watch videos. Discuss how you would apply each of these considerations as you build your team.

What type of team would you assemble (positions and experience level) to achieve your objective? Why? Be sure to explain their roles and responsibilities

Explanation / Answer

The four major considerations when building a group into an effective team are:

1. Co-operation – The members of an effective team have to co-operate with each other so as to ensure that their efforts are systematically integrated.

2. Trust – The members of the team should have credibility and accountability. This will lead to creation of trust.

3. Cohesiveness – This consideration is related to the aspect that the team members are working together as a single unit.

4. Performance goals and feedback – The goals have to be clear and measurable and regular and continuous feedback should be given to employees.

As the team leader who is responsible for building a team of eight people I will start by ensuring that the efforts of all the eight members are integrated in a systematic manner. I will make sure that all the members are respectful of each other and are working towards a common cause. To develop trust, I as a manager, will show my professionalism, my technical and managerial expertise and will apply the principles of fairness, open communication and ethical decision making to build and sustain trust. To ensure cohesiveness I will encourage face to face exchanges and interactions of the team members. I will also underline and emphasize on common characteristics of the members. Lastly I, as the manager, will set goals for the team and provide the, with regular feedback. This will enable the members to revisit their goals and review the progress.

The team that I will assemble will be mixed bag in terms of positions and experience level. It will consist of highly experienced members as well as members who are not very experienced but have an excellent track record and technical expertise required to design the baby stroller. The mix of experience and ability will be optimized.

Roles and responsibilities of each member will be clearly defined and will be allocated on a phase wise basis. Some member will be responsible for developing only the entertainment system while some members will look into developing a stroller in-sync with the entertainment system.
