Name That Theory

There are many theories of motivation. Some are interested in why people are motivated, others in the process of motivation, and yet others in the practical application of our knowledge about motivation. The hows and whys of motivation are important in a theoretical sense. A manager's ability to apply this knowledge is critical in a practical sense. You can have the best product, an appropriate structure, and a great strategy, but if you cannot motivate your workers to perform at a high level, you still will not succeed.

This exercise will help you differentiate among the various motivational theories. You will be asked to match an individual's actions, attitudes, or beliefs to a given theory.

Roll over each name to read a description. Using the information provided about their actions, attitudes, or beliefs, match each individual to a given theory. Then, place the name in the correct column in the chart.

Explanation / Answer

Scott - Herzberg’s Motivator-Hygiene Theory - He provides training to his workers on new machinary so that their job satisfaction could be improved by providing hygiene factors in the work-place.

Caroline - Expectancy Theory - She is not motivated as the organization does not ensure that the rewards being offered are deserved by her for her outstanding performance.

Tony - Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory - His 'physiological' (good home), 'safety' (safe job) and 'social belonging' (great friends) stages of needs are already achieved. He is motivated to achieve the other two stages 'self-esteem' and 'self-actualization' through a promise of promotion by his manager.

Elise - Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory - She motivates her top worker to achieve the most important 'physiological' stage of her basic needs (good home/shelter) by giving early bonus and an advance payment.

Nicholas - Herzberg’s Motivator-Hygiene Theory - Good working conditions, adequate pay and excellent supervision has been ensured by him to his subordinates as 'high hygiene and high motivation' creates greater performance to the company.

Janelle - McClelland’s Needs Theory - 'Need for power' is being motivated to influence other team members and offer them challenging projects.

Brandon - Adam's Equity Theory - He is demotivated as he feels that his inputs (more time and energy) are not fairly rewarded by outputs (pay).

Mira - McClelland’s Needs Theory - She believes in 'Need for Achievement' factor under this theory which states results (here, additional pay) are produced on the basis of their effort than any other factors.

Curtis - Equity Theory - He gives equal importance to the inputs as well as outputs (good performance reviews) to motivate his co-workers.

Aileen - Herzberg’s Motivator-Hygiene Theory - She voluntarily takes up responsibility which gives her a positive satisfaction to her job and thus, improve her achievements.
