Question

Funplace is a large school with more than five hundred students at Metropolitan Melbourne. With this size, the school enjoys relatively high diversity of staff such as specialist teachers, librarian, sport activity managers, after school care programs take carers, religious counsellors, etc. It is reported that there were ongoing problems at the school and parents seem to be unhappy about the management.

As a consultant you are employed to investigate the situation. Provide two perspectives one from administrative theory and one from system approach and discuss the issues that you might expect to unravel. (You could support this by Fayol s arguments or Webber s but you should not mention both) Please make answer clearly

Explanation / Answer

As a consultant its important to analyse the situation of the place and understand the issues that are expected to unravel.

> Funpalce is a huge school with more than 500 students at the prime location.

> As it is a large school it contains diversity in the environment, different types of students, different types of faculties with different mind sets.

> Maintaining and coordinating the people with different mind sets is very difficult and challenging job.

As a consultant the issues faced by the school are :-

1) They were unable to maintain the balance between the authority and the responsibility of the organisation structure.

2) Students were confused with the orders of the faculty, there was no unity of direction. Their were number of activities performed by the student but each activity was directed towards different objectives.

3) The school was unable to manage the number of students but still they were taking admission of more and more students for their profit which is not correct. They have to subordinate their interest for the betterment of the students.

4) The school authority was not able to give proper remuneration to the employee because they were higher in number.

5) The school was unable to work on the most important element that is team work. The management was not working as a team.

My perspective towards the school situation are as follows:-

1) The school is not following the adminstration theory,

> It stats that there should be a formal and rational admistration structure.

>There should be division of labour, proper delegation of authority and responsiboility.

> The school was lacking in forming a clear hierarchical structure which had result in confusion in the authorities and responsibilties of the employee. Very first school should focus on making a strong administration structure so that every one knows their jobs and level of responsibilties and take charge of it.

> There should be unity of command and focus on the specialisation issues like distributing work among the employee and make their work groups.

2) The school should apply the system approach

> Organization is an open system which includes interacting and interdependent parts known as subsystems.

> School should understand that everything is interconnected and interdependent. Issue in one subsystem will effect the other subsystem. As there is diversity in the school so it forms a complex whole system.

> System approach focus on the overall effectiveness of the school rather than effectiveness of an one subsystem like directors, faculty or students.

> The school should focus on the fomal structure by taking sociology and philosophy techniques which will surely result in the growth of the school as well as the growth of the students studing there.

> The directors should regularly focus on the organisation structure, planning and controlling the activities.

So, finally the school should make a proper clear administration structure for unity of command and direction which will help in smooth working of their organisation as well as this will help students to focus on their objective and school should focus on effectiveness of their organisation rather than considering their own interests. This will surely take the school at the heights of growth and develpoment.
