Question

One Step Further

Set in the antebellum era, the award-winning 2012 film Django Unchained features a freed slave (Jamie Foxx) who travels across the Deep South and Old West with a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) in order to rescue his wife (Kerry Washington) from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). Like many of Quentin Tarantino’s other films, Django Unchained elicited both accolades and criticism. Many critics objected to the film’s use of violence and racial epithets. But there was also controversy over the film’s promotional products—namely, action figures of the main characters in the film. Consider, for example, the following petition started by Brockton, Massachusetts, resident Geralyn Smith through the website www.change.org.

National Entertainment Collectibles Association (NECA): Stop the manufacture and sale of Django Unchained collector dolls

These dolls, while based on fictional characters, are slaves and remind many Black people of a painful past. This movie has no historical significance and was made solely for entertainment value. I don’t see how NECA can, in good conscience, make a doll that represents a period in OUR history when Blacks were raped and hung and families destroyed just because of the color of our skin. Did you make Schindler’s List dolls when it came out? These dolls are disrespectful to the Black Americans who helped build this country. They are an insult to our heritage.

Please answer the following questons:

What is the conclusion of the argument presented in this petition? What are the main premises supporting that conclusion? Are any of these claims implied? Specify how.

Would you consider signing this petition based solely on the argument presented? If so, why? If not, why not?

Visit www.change.org. Find a petition that you find particularly well-argued. What makes it a good argument? Alternatively, find a petition that you find well-intentioned, but poorly argued. How would you rewrite the petition?

Explanation / Answer

The conclusion of the argument is, Black people have been criticized in the movie and also the dolls which have been created were against to the interest of the Black Americans. More than everything Black Americans have been neglected and they are the people who really helped to build the country. Totally the black Americans have been insulted. There have been no claims identified.

Looks like the petition is not based only on the mentioned argument. Since we have been watching the issues between black and white American from ages and there has been number of fights happening between them, this issue has just added the fire between both the communities and led to this petition

The petition that was really well argued was

Make self-defence course mandatory in Maharashtra schools

The poorly argued petition was the below where Passport to include mother’s name in passport rather father’s name.

https://www.change.org/p/sushmaswaraj-hmoindia-passport-for-my-daughter-with-mother-?s-name

The petition written was not really bad. However it is the policy that needs to be allowed by everyone and if anything to be amended it needs to be based on the request and not by fighting with the officers. Hence according to me the policy needs to be little bit on a request basis rather dominating
