Summarize the main argument of Emily Chang’s excerpt from her book Brotopia that I asked you to read (the Vanity Fair article). What does this say about the nature of gender relations (and sexual exploitation) in Silicon Valley? What might/should be done about this?Explanation / Answer
The Main argument of Emily Chang revolves around the money, power, sex, and drugs. She goes on to discuss gender bias in the silicon valley parties where Men can be seen having wide sexual orientation and indulge in their sexual tendencies and fantasies at these parties mostly supported by the influence of drugs but a similar behavior by a woman can get them labeled as an easy woman. Further, these parties are also necessary for conducting business. All key business makers of Silicon Valley are seen finding investors, making business decisions etc. Attending the party is only by a personal invite and what happens inside is seldom discussed or accepted in the real world.
The main discussion revolves around the fact that the attitude of the society and the parties are still patriarchal where men’s sexual orientation and journey of self-exploration including drugs is acceptable but woman indulging in similar activity gets her labeled as an easy and a slut. Its old school of thought for a woman being treated differently and ridiculed for being different. She also focuses on easy acceptance of man's behavior in some cases even acceptance from their wives.
It indicates though we are in the 21st century it’s still a male-dominated world with men being allowed to explore their fantasies freely and being accepted for it. Woman are ridiculed and sidelined for a similar behavior and get labeled as sluts. It also shows the fragile side of human behavior which is so obsessed by money and power that they will go to any extent to make their sexual dreams come true.
There is a lot which can be done as a society to regulate this behavior but it has to start with the self. The first is we can start by understanding that both men and woman are equal and in today’s world equally educated, capable and skilled. The men should stop seeing woman as weaker sex or commodities. There is a need to change the notions of sexual inequality and discrimination by removing it in the early childhood starting from home, school onwards. Further exploring sexual tendencies in such parties which support wild behavior supported by drugs should be banned by the government. The law should impose restrictions on rave parties and exploitation of woman in name of money and power.
To sum it up there is a need to change the societies mindset which still sees a woman as soft cuddle-able creatures to use for pleasure only. The society should accept men and woman as equals and treat them so professionally and personally.
