USING TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE STUDENT PREPARATION FOR AND PARTICIPATION IN MARKETING COURSES: THE RANDOM SELECTOR MODEL

This article focuses on the relationship between interactive learning courses and class participation. Its purpose was to identify techniques that would encourage both preparation and participation. This is where the Random Selector Model is introduced. In particular, students in marketing courses are often found to participate in team projects, case analyses, and other class activities. However, being that there is often an abundance of students in each class, it is almost impossible to have each team or student report their findings and experiences in class. This model works to help the instructor pick individual students or teams to participate, at random. It is important to note, that because the method is random, the students do not believe the instructor is picking/favoring particular students. It also motivates students to prepare based on the anticipation of being picked. The model is configured through different panels where each team is listed and within each team selection, the individual students apart of that team are shown through images. The program then scrolls through, and at random, selects a student or team. The instructor, in this instance, is allowing the computer program to select the teams. This application allows for an easier way to randomly select students/teams without bias.
