No, the statement of Nike and FedEx should not be misunderstood as they wasted time in developing a plan rather as per the tastes and preferences of the people they had to modify the plan accordingly and hence they did not use the original plan. The original plan was made in a certain time period for a specific set of situation but when there was time to implement the same situation changed and the needs of the people also changed so although their original plan was not implemented but it cannot be considered as a waste of time because the insights that FedEx and Nike got from the original plan were used in the new plan.
In the film and industry as well, the management has to ensure that a robust plan is made to ascertain that they get enough funding to start and the idea should be presented in such a way that long term and short term goals are clearly defined and stated. Any investment in this industry should be supported by relevant data and forecasted revenues and hence a comprehensive plan is necessary.
