Question
What do you think about the methods used by Sony to promote its new camera phone as discussed in the example about street marketing? Would you feel deceived (and perhaps angry) if you discovered you were being "duped” into believing the charade by the actors and ended up buying a Sony camera phone? Would the Sony street marketing campaign have worked if people knew up-front that it was advertiser sponsored? Is there a difference between techniques that disclose the identity of the marketer and those that do not?
Explanation / Answer
It was a very good Guerilla marketing strategy used by Sonly. But as a Marketing knowledgeable person myself, i would feel deceived by these actors/Sony into buying one. I do not think it would work, if people come to know earlier about the stunt involved, as Surprise is the key here.
Yes, there are differences, as there are Many Surprises and sudden discoveries during these types of Guerilla marketing strategies and entice the crowd easily into buying the product without actually giving away any big discounts, whereas other involve discounts.
