Question

Ann Elkin, who works for Brill Co., has been sent out to conduct two customer evaluations, which have gone much more quickly than Ann anticipated. Her supervisor does not expect Ann back until after lunch. It is now 10:30 A.M., and Ann would like to run some personal errands and then go to lunch before returning to work at 1:00 P.M. Should Ann take the time? Would you? Why or why not? Is this any different than if Ann was sitting at her office desk using a work computer to access her personal email, surf the internet, check social media or make personal phone calls on her work phone?

Be sure to consider the categories of ethical values and apply one or two models before reaching your conclusion.

Explanation / Answer

As the case presented, it is quite clear that Ann should not take time as stated n the case in fact, she should have seek for the permission from her manager. In fact, being the employee of an organization, Ann should invest her time in planning the different activities of how she can contribute effectively towards the accomplishment of organizational goals.

If she really needs some free time in which she can resolve her personal issues, then she must go to her boss to take the permission from her boss to take some hours free from her job. Such a gesture will reflect her high moral and integrity.

If I were in place of Ann, I would not have done the same. As a rule of employment, during the time a person is in the office, all of her time should be invested in the works and activities pertaining to the organization rather than solving her own issues. However there is nothing illegal but yes, this sort of acts fall under the category of unethical practices.

In fact there will be no difference even if Ann was sitting at her office desk using a work computer to access her personal email, surf the internet, check social media or make personal phone calls on her work phone as even then she is expected to involve in the organizational activities rather than solving her personal affairs.
