Strategic alliance refers to the partnership between two or more firms for the mutual benefit by combining their resources and make use of each other’s competitive advantages in the market. Global alliance involves making partnership between companies internationally. The main challenge in making global alliance is that there is chances of failure while taking the new model and may end up in takeover of the weak partner. Another challenge deals with the governance of the alliance and there are chances that the strongest partner may dominate the alliance. There are chances of competition within the alliance between the partners. Another challenge is that when the firms are not ready to collaborate effectively it may create mistrust and secrecy among the partners which may affect the purpose of creating the alliance.

Successful alliance need to choose partner with compatible strategy goals and objectives. Once the alliance is reached, the partners should work out regarding how each will deal with the competitively sensitive information or the proprietary technology. There should be a clear idea on what information will be shared and how to make use of the shared information. The steps involved in making international joint venture once the alliance is formed may include choosing the right person as the general manager and the general manager should ensure that the alliance is managed properly. Next step involves choosing the right location for the alliance and the third step is setting the rules and regulations for controlling the venture effectively.
