Q49. Recall that in the big Yellowstone fires, lodgepole pines burned and then grew back within several decades. With respect to fire, are lodgepole pines resistant and/or resilient? Lodgepole pines are resistant. Lodgepole pines are resilient. Lodgepole pines are both resistant and resilient. Lodgepole pines are neither resistant or resilient. Q50. Redwood trees (Sequoia sempervirens) have more biomass than any other plant species In western redwood forests. They greatly impact the other plant and animal species that live in redwood forests. If removed, most understory plants and their associated herbivores could not survive. Are redwood trees keystone species? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

Answer

49. In general plants develop by seed dissemination. The seeds are disseminated by various ways. In some plants they are burst open only when they are exposed to fire. This type of seed dissemination is known as serotiny. The best example of such plants are pine trees. This is the reason why they develop many years after exposure to fire. This adaptation in such plants facilitates their growth even after they burnt in unexpected fires in forests. This ability to spring back is termed as resilience.

Therefore, option b is the correct answer.

50. The keystone species plays a major role in maintaining the ecological community. If this species is removed from the habitat, then the entire conditions of the ecosystem are affected. The redwood trees greatly impact other species living in that habitat.

Therefore, the redwood trees are considered as keystone species.
