Question
These questions can seem a little ambiguous that's why I need help. It was based on an Action Potential simulation lab.
1)"Threshold" corresponds to a particular membrane VOLTAGE value.
A)True
B) False
2) The maximum possible membrane voltage for generating an action potential is -56 mv. what could be another factor in action potential initiation based on your observations?
A) Negative slope of the membrane voltage facilitates the initiation of an AP.
B) Positive slope of the membrane voltage facilitates the initiation of an AP.
C) Total amount of charge injected since the last action potential needs to exceed a threshold and not the membrane voltage.
D) My observations are consistent with a threshold in membrane voltage.
Explanation / Answer
1) True
Explanation :
The action potential is an explosion of electrical activity that is created by a depolarizing current. This means that some event (a stimulus) causes the resting potential to move toward 0 mV. When the depolarization reaches about -55 mV a neuron will fire an action potential. This is the threshold. Therefore it's a particular membrane voltage value.
2. Positive slope of the membrane voltage facilitates the initiation of Action Potential. The resting membrane potential of a neuron is about -70 mV. When there is positive slope the potential will move towards -55 mV which is the threshold.
