Question

You are the newly hired HR manager in a family-run organization with a long standing informal policy of not hiring people with disabilities. You do a bit of investigation and discover the thought internally, that disabled workers will not be as productive and it will be more costly in the long run to employ them. Assess the situation from an ethical perspective. How might you go about changing this informal policy? What data can you provide about the social benefits of doing this? How would you present this information to the owners? Would you try to take a stand and hire a disabled person to "break the ice"?

Explanation / Answer

As the new HR manager it would be my mission to employ people with disabilities because it is the right thing to do.

Depending on the industry of the company there are specific jobs that people with specific disabilities unfortunately cannot do, but there are many processes where they can help, task that don’t require to do job they physical can’t do.

Depending on what country we do operations we need to hire at least 1 person with disability for every 10 employees who don’t have one. If we run a production company we can hire these people for the administrative area as assistants or on the warehouse where the work is somehow repetitive and they will not have any problems.

Besides, companies who hire people with disability get benefits from the government, this is information I will share with the owners.

Customers prefer brands that make differences on their employees, when you see a company that employees people with disabilities you will prefer their products because of the differences they are making on the lives of their employees.
