Question
You are the vice-president at a large multinational corporation and responsible for the HR (Human Relations) department. You are about to finalize a new policy for taking sick leave from work that will determine worldwide policy for thousands of employees in about 20 nations. In current policy, employees are entitled to take up to 2 weeks of sick leave to care for a family member but after the 2 weeks, the employee will no longer get paid. A finance manager approaches you to describe a recent situation with an employee who exhausted the 2 weeks and had to go on un-paid leave but as a result, the employee could not pay his rent and became homeless. The finance manager also informed you that most of the company’s employees are getting older and have aging parents or close family relatives to look after. If you provide a generous leave policy, the company may suffer significant financial burden. If you do not (provide a generous policy), employees may leave (resign from the company) and the public may be less willing to patronize your company. Explain your new policy decision on sick leave and explain how you came to the decision.
Explanation / Answer
Employees most of the time consider benefits more than average salary before taking up a job. Sick leaves and policies related to it is very important consideartion for all levels of employees.
Here the situation demands that a new policy gets design related to sick leaves. However it is not that easy as on one side the cost to company is there and on other side the satisfaction of employees also matter.
After considering all the factors the following decision could be taken -
The new policy will have a taste of old policy. But this new policy will surely consider the contigent factors like age, employees problem and will make few changes.
According to proposed new policy related to sick leaves of employees it could be done that a specific age limlit could have been set such as 45 or 50 years. Employees above this age would be entitled to have more than 2 paid sick leaves let say 2.5 week and after that for specific days like 7 more days they will get half paid and after that unpaid leaves will be there. Secondly, not only for age such relaxation would be made for those also who would have sick parents/ who are single parent but then they will have to prove such claim to get such entitlement. Thirdly, flexibility should be there like if any unseen problem occurs (like mentioned by finance manager) customized flexible benefits may also be given at that tiem after due consideration to the whole situation and problem. Fourthy another feature could be added that one may barter his/her unpaid sick leaves with any other benefits to get thoseunpaid sick leaves converted into paid sick leaves.
Thus the structure would be same as earlier that is 2 week paid sick leaves for all BUT with given exceptions and flexibility described above.
