It is difficult to judge a candidate by asking just two questions that are too broad. I would start the interview by making the candidate comfortable and asking if they need anything. Further, the discussion would start with the question, " Tell me about yourself". Here I can put a limit suggesting to the candidate to describe things, not on the resume. Once the candidate starts and finishes, I would ask pointed questions from the statements made by the candidate. For example - If a candidate talks about his/her previous work experience, I would ask questions such as:

These things would give me a better perspective on the candidate's thought process, success and misses and their motivation for change. All these factors lead to a holistic evaluation of the candidate. At the end, I would throw in the question regarding, " Why we should hire?". This is to test the confidence of candidate and calmness while answering such a question. The interview must end with me asking if the candidate needs any information or has any questions.
