Information technoloy is at the heart of modern life. It touches different people in different ways. Some are comfortable with new technologies; other may be intimidated at least first. EHRs, PHRs and other health IT development tends to make many patients more active participants in their own health care, as providers adopt new technologies such as EHRs, it's important to keep the patient's prespective in mind.
Activating the EHR involves a multi-disciplinary approach to prepare the new system, ensure privacy and security compliance, design practice workflows, train the care team and manage the adoption process. A thoughtful EHR implementation can help the practice adapt more easily to the new system, which benefit patients, physicians and staff. Nine steps to successful EHR implementation are
The HIPAA privacy rules requires health plans and covered health care providers to develop and distribute a notice that provides option for meeting the requirement to create notices of privacy practices (NPPP).
HHS developed the model NPPs to help improve patients experience and understanding. These model use plain language and approachable design.
The option below are separated into two sets , for health plans and health care providers. Each set contains three formatted options and text only option in English and Spanish. They are:
The models reflect the regulatory change of the Omnibus Rule (2013). In particulars, the models highligt the new patient right to access their electronic information held in an electronic health record, if their provider has an EHR in their practice. Covered entities may use these models by entering their specific information.
"Meaningful use" has no simple definition, and is ultimately defined by the specific requirements laid out in the final rule. The rule embodies and implements the stautory requirements of the HITECH Act that specified three requirements for meaningful use.
One of the useful case studies is Dr. Lloyed Fisher is a pediatrician at the May Street practice and its EHR physian champion. Dr. Fisher spend 20% of his time working on EHR issues and 80% of his time on his clinical practice. He attribute this allocation of physician time to EHR development and troubleshooting to aiding greatly in the implementation and acceptance of the EHR at the May Street practice and fallon clinic.
2nd case study is about Dover family physicians. Dover family adopted an electronic health record (EHR) system in 2008, with a goal of improving the quality of patient care especialy strengthening preventive care services. The practice has focused on ways to use the EHR to engage patient and their family members in their health and healthcare through a patient portal implementation. The practice located in Dover, Delaware, has four physician and two physician assistants, and provides primary care to more than 800 patients weekly.
The workforce components includes an updated and expanded set of health IT instructional materials, funded by the office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), to help healthcare workers and others stay current in the changing healthcare environment and deliver care more effectively.
The new instructional materials are in five areas relevant to improved care delivery; population health, care coordination and interoperable health IT systems, value based care, healthcare data analytics and patient-centered care. These areas reflect changes in the U.S. healthcare system spurred by health reform to achieve better care, smarter spending and healthier people.
In addition, 20 existing instructional modules develops under ONC's Curriculum Development Centers program were updated. These materials are relevant to physicians, nurses and other healthcare workers who utilize health IT in care delivery, and others in broader healthcare system.
