Question

In narrative essay format, I want you to describe the most intractable organizational opportunity or most engaging organizational challenge that you have ever encountered as an employee. The organizational issue can be an opportunity that was leveraged successfully. Similarly, the organizational issue can be a challenge that was addressed successfully. You can describe the issue itself, the issue and the approach. The challenge for managers, therefore, is to apply the theory and practice of management and organizational behavior to address, and perhaps resolve, the issue (opportunity or challenge to deliver persistent and consistent value in the organization.

Explanation / Answer

My mentor always tells me that you do not know what your potential is and one day when you will realize, you would move the world we know.

This is an incident when I was performing well at my job and it was the time when my bosses see me moving to next step, next set of challenges.
I had full confidence in me but deep down there was a hesitation if I would be able to take that much responsibility.

I used to think this thing at times but had no idea what was coming up for me.
It was the time when we were working on a project for a US site and our point of contact was a person who was stubborn and always wanted to work his way. There were lot of conflicts going on but the management wanted all of us to work together.

But as the situation was was getting grave, the management came up with a plan to send someone from our team to USA onsite to oversome this communication gap and smoothen out the process. So, they planned to send my senior to US. Now, there is a long process to get visa for US and is not guarantee that you will get one, no matter how urgent your work is. Therfore, my senior went ahead for the process but to everybody's surprise his visa got rejected. Now it was a big challenge for the management to control the situation.

To my one of the biggest suprise, when the management informed me that they have decided to send me to US and go ahead with the visa process. For 1-2 days, I could not absorb this and when I cam eback to my senses, I started preparing for the visa interview and worked hard to understand the tits and bits of visa application. Everybody in the company were doubtful if I would be able to get through the visa interview. So, the day of the test came - one of the most important tests of my life and I got through with it. My manager literally jumped off his seat when he got this news. Everybody was happy and relieved and I was now more confident than ever and said to myself, that this was just a beignning, the real challenge is lying ahead.

So, I went to USA and met the person, the stubborn point of contact. I knew from the first day that if I am able to convince him to follow the right process and everything, there would be no turning back from there. So, I was very focussed on understanding his point of view. I worked for few days according to him and tried to understand his style of work, which was actually not that bad but needed improvement. At that point of time, the person was very happy with my work. I took that opportunity to discuss with him my point of view and the way we work in India, he was 90 percent convinced.

My trip was for one and a half months and by then we were totally on the same page and believe me this was our client who had a great deal of business for us. It seemed a humongous task for us while we were back in India but now everything was smooth. I could only remember one thing said by my mentor, that I have the potential to move mountains and at that I agreed to him somewhat.
