Question
In my evolution class, We used Evodots website to see how predation occur in a population to see how species or a certain species evolve over time. after this exercise, we are asked to answer the following question, and I have no idea what it means Question: "In light of what we've discussed and what you've seen in this exercise, evaluate the following quote from Ann Coulter" Quote: "The second prong of Darwin's theory is generally nothing but a circular statement: through the process of natural selection, the fittest survive. Who are the fittest? The ones who survive! Why look-it happens every time! The survival of the fittest would be a joke if it weren't part of the belief system of a fanatical cult infesting the scientific community. The beauty of having a scientific theory that's a tautology is that it can't be disproved" please help me out with this. Thank you
Explanation / Answer
In this discussion you basically have to prove or disprove that the natural selection and survial of the fittest are just not tautology and have some meaning. tautology is a statement that is true by necessity or by virtue of it's logical form. Basically we are arguing that its not the survival of the fittest always,
I would be presenting a few points suggesting that the terms used by darwin like survival of fittest is just a descriptive lablel to refer to the theory he was trying to put across:
1. it is not a tautology because there are characters generated by genetic drift, and they also help in survival.
2. it is not a tautology because, survival of fittest is also known as natural selection.
3. it is not a tautology because it can predict the events that are going to take place in the future, it could sometime predict the results of some experiments,
4. it is not a tautology because fit characters means the ones that have been tested in the real world and thus have been adapted by organisms, it is not a defined set of characters that we are calling fittest.
