Question

1. A company has a production line for the manufacture of an item. The line is integrated by five work stations. Which have the following information. The line is designed with an allowable standard time of 0.65 Min./ piece in each of them. The standard times applied in the production line are given in the table below.

Determine the following:

a. Production cycle, production rate and expected volume per month. Consider 25 days and a single 10-hour shift.

b. According to the permissible standard for the line ¿What is the desired production per shift?

c. According to the standards applied in the line, what is the production per expected or actual shift?

d. The company wants to produce 5,000 pieces in a 10-hour shift. What is the number of workers that should work in this line?

e. For the case of subsection d, what is the assignment of operators to each of the stations on the line?

f. What is the efficiency of this production line?

Explanation / Answer

a)

Production cycle = Time of bottleneck activity = Time of station 3 or 5 = 0.65 min per piece

Production rate = 1/Production cycle = 1/0.65 = 1.54 pieces per min

Expected volume per month = Total time in a month/Production cycle = 25*10*60/0.65 = 23,077 pieces per month

b) Standard output per shift = Total time in a shift/Standard rate = 10*60/0.65 = 923 pieces

c) Actual production per shift is same as standard time as both have same production cycle time of 0.65 min. Hence 923 pieces

d) For 5000 pieces, per shift, standard rate = 10*60/5000 = 0.12 min per piece

If current setup has 5 stations and requires 5 workers for 0.65 min per piece output rate, then number of workers required for 0.12 min per piece basis each station will be

Station 1 = 0.62/0.12 = 5.2. Hence 6

Station 2 = 0.58/0.12 = 4.8. Hence 5

Station 3 = 0.65/0.12 = 5.4. Hence, 6

Station 4 = 0.61/0.12 = 5.1. Hence, 6

Station 5 = 0.65/0.12 = 5.4. Hence, 6

So, total workers = 29
