Based on your readings and other references, do you agree with this statement? What to include in your response. What are the key assumptions of scientific management according to Taylor? - Outline the principle of dividing labour evenly between workers and managers and how it is said to promote a sense of co-operation between workers and management view with examples in modern day organisations. organisations. .Do you agree with this statement? If so, provide support for your point of If not, provide support for your point of view with examples in modern day

Explanation / Answer

Without denying the fact that the above principle stated along with the entire Scientific Management principles by Taylor would result in improved productivity and have a short term positive impact on the industry, I do not completely agree that dividing labour equally between managers and workers would promote a sense of cooperation.

Some of the key assumptions that Taylor has taken can be summarized as follows:

-      Efficiency is the sole and primary goal of labour

-      Human judgment ranks lower than productivity calculations done on paper

-      Human judgment is flawed because it involves a certain level of complication

-      All things that can be measured alone has value

By the equal division of labour between workers and managers to promote a sense of cooperation, Taylor basically means that the managers with the help of the Scientific Management principles would plan the work and the workers would actually perform the talk. To a great extend this also means that the management would decide the method of work, the conditions of work and the time of completion of work. In all previous cases, this would have been left to the discretion of the workers.

I do not agree with this statement and thought process. The process if implemented would increase the monotony of work. The significance of skill, task identity and feedback for improvements all take a back seat. Hence, in the short-term the productivity and efficiency would shoot up. However, in the long run the monotony would lead to employee dissatisfaction and complaints.

Modern day organizations like Google certainly do have some standard operating procedures (SOPs). However, they would not like to adopt the scientific management. They believe in an open culture where they allow employees to think out of the box and come up with novel, innovative solutions for every day issues and problems. The efficiency improvement and enhanced productivity comes through this and not by creating a monotonous work sphere where individual skills are crushed.
