Effective written communication skills are paramount to being an effective Energy Manager. This lesson will focus on the critical competencies necessary to communicate effectively with other professionals.

Think of a time in which you received an email in which you had to read it multiple times to truly understand the message. What was the email about? Why was it so difficult to understand? What could have been done differently to ensure that the correct message was transmitted and received?

Email writing is a very different art where the individual has to put a point in as short and simple ways as possible. But, there are lot of emails which have a huge amount of content and it is often very difficult and confusing to understand the message that is intended. One such email that I have received and it took a lot of time for me to understand was the email from an insurance company. The reason I could not understand the email when I read for the first time was because it was very length and there were insurance jargons without explanations, which as a layman I cannot understand.

This email came to me when I had enquired for the benefits of a particular insurance plan, but the insurance agent was so negligent that he had shared me the content of the complete document which I would anyways read from the insurance company's website. There was no clear explanations on the things that I wanted to understand and ultimately I had to refer to a different insurance policy.

If the insurance agent would have shown some commitment in explaining some of the important benefits in a simple layman language thn probably I would have got to understand the terms and conditions, the benefits and the uses of the insurance policy better. Similarly, if it was listed in key bullet points, it would have been even more easy to understand the matter.
