Humanists like Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow emphasized on the role of helping and building relationships with their clients in the process of counselling and interview in order to bring about a change in behaviour. Carl Rogers, developed the 'client-centered' therapy which only focused on the thoughts and feelings of the client. It emphasizes on the client counsellor relationship. As the client spoke about his thoughts and feelings and with a little guidance from the counsellor, a person is able to rediscover themselves. Humanists argued that every individual is capable of reaching their maximum potential. Every person can be self-actualized. Individuals only need a helping hand in order to exhibit congruence in their real self and ideal self. People tend to have an image of their ideal self, something that they would like to be. However, it is a long process which needs help from a counsellor for a person to be able to make behavioural changes in order to achieve one's ideal self.

Building client relationships for behavioural changes is of utmost importance to the humanistic behavioural approach.
