Explanation / Answer

a. A supermarket was interested in determining its image. It dropped a short questionnaire into the grocery bag of each customer before putting in the groceries.

This is not an ideal way of collecting data from the customers as the questionnaire would be damaged. Additionally, the customers might not fill-in the crumpled piece of questionnaire. The best alternative is to request the customer to fill-in their questionnaire before leaving the supermarket. Since you are handling customer face-to-face, the questionnaire should just take 3-5 minutes to fill-in.

b. To assess the extent of its trade area, a shopping mall stationed interviewers in the parking lot every Monday and Friday evening. Interviewers walked up to persons after they had parked their cars and asked them for their ZIP codes.

In this method, all the interviewers would not be willing to provide the ZIP codes. Additionally, this method of random sampling would not cover the customers who really come from far-off areas which might not cover the trade area. The best alternative is to request the customers themselves to provide their ZIP codes while billing the products.

c. To assess the popularity of a new movie, a major studio invited people to call a 900 number and vote yes (they would see it again) or no (they would not see it again). Each caller was billed a two-dollar charge.

People would not be willing to pay a fee for the survey. Hence, this method would not yield the sampling size to determine the popularity of the new movie. People are too busy to call a 900 number to just say yes or no. The best alternative is personal interviews. When the people start coming out of the movie theatre, an interviewer can ask if he/she is interested in seeing the movie again.

2. You have been charged with determining how to attract more business majors to your school. Write an outline of the steps you would take, including the sampling procedures, to accomplish the task.

Step 1- First, we need to determine what are the business majors that has more prospect in the future and are most preferred by the students.

Step 2- A random sample size of 75 can be used to assess the preferred business majors. A stratum sampling technique can be used to interview the students. In this method, every student who is eligible to opt for the business majors can be requested to fill-in the questionnaire.

Step 3- Once the questionnaires have been filled-in, the collected data need to be analyzed to determine the business majors that are preferred by the students.

Step 4- Once the business majors have been identified, then the next step is to collaborate with Universities or Business Schools for a tie-up to bring-in the business majors to the school. The Business Schools would benefit by the increased popularity. In other words, the Business SChools establishes its brand in the shcools segment.
