Question

1. (20 Points) You are hired as an Operations Manager, the manager that you are replacing focused on the right/correct treatment of people to obtain performance. However the Operations Director noticed that performance throughout the past year has been decreasing and you have a reputation for being able to effectively manage with a focus towards administrative and scientific skills, that is why you got the job! Describe the major similarities and differences between the manager you are replacing and yourself? Make your comparison focusing on what you learned from classical and behavioral theorists with respect to their approach to management.

Explanation / Answer

The similarities between the manager that I am replacing and me are that both of us have a strong focus on performance. The objective or the end result for both of us is the same and that is the performance, productivity and efficiency of the employees that we are managing. In other words the object of both my predecessor and me is the same and that is to effectively manage employees and their work.

However this is where the similarities end. The manager that I am replacing had a management philosophy that was based on behavioral management principles. As per the behavioral management principles and theory the emphasis should be on human emotions and relationships when managing people. On the other hand I believe on the classical management theoretical framework and as per the principles of classical management focus on productivity and efficiency are of prime importance for a manager.

My predecessor (i.e. the manager that I am replacing) must have focused more on motivating the employees and how to best make use of social factors, psychological factors and economic incentives to motivate people. My approach to managing people is different and I believe that people are the key element of improving productivity in an organization. My management of people will be based on planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating and controlling.
