Question
"Maintain or Rebuild" Please respond to the following:
Imagine a small college that maintains its student records in a system. This system is approximately 15 years old and has been expanded upon many times over the years to meet ongoing demands. Increasing demands warrant a significant change to the student record system. Provide three (3) reasons in favor of continuing the expansion of the system and three (3) reasons in favor of rebuilding the system. Determine which approach you would recommend and explain why.
Consider the size of the college, the number of times the current system has been updated, the technologies available, and other similar factors. Recommend the architecture suitable for this college if it was decided that the student records system should be rebuilt. Provide a rationale for your recommendation. Note: Refer to Chapter 4 of the text for the information on architecture.
Explanation / Answer
Solution: -
Since the system is 15 years older and things are requiring to get updated according to the requirement, so here I will be talking about 3 reasons why the system should not be upgraded and also describe 3 reasons, why thinks needs to be upgraded:
Here are 3 reasons why systems must be upgraded to new technology: -
So, I would rather suggest to go with the new technology as it maintenance will become easy and data security will be implemented. In the old versioned application, there is a huge risk for data breaching. But in the new technology, that risk is minimized significantly as lots of tools are there to fight against the malware and attackers.
If college is going to change the whole architecture of the operation, then it will be best for them to migrate to the cloud-based functionality. Most of the organizations are preferring cloud for migrating their application. Since lots of features are provided by cloud. As I have already described the scalability feature, now another mind-blowing feature is the data availability. The cloud service providers ensure that the data availability will be 99.999% that means data will not be lost. Moreover, if you are opting for cloud, the physical resources will be minimized. So, there is no need of implementing large physical servers. Even cloud provides database facility where all the data can be arranged in a systematic manner and the administrative job also become easy.
