Explanation / Answer
Warehouse management system (WMS)
A warehouse management system (WMS) is a software used to manage operations in a warehouse including inventory management, picking processes, storage, movement of goods, auditing and many more. A WMS is an integral part of the supply chain, the primary goal of which is to track and control the movement and storage of product or materials within a warehouse, and process the associated inventory actions, including: receiving, adding, picking, quality control, shipping, reporting, and forecasting. It streamlines and facilitates processes and a product's journey throughout the warehouse for example, such a system will direct and optimize movement of the goods by utilizing real-time inventory data to determine the actual warehouse location to retrieve the product from the designated place to the transportation bay, to intermediate storage locations or to a final customer. The system can manage multiple warehouses simultaneously for instance, such an arrangement might be a central warehouse, a regional warehouse and retail warehouses. The primary objective of this management system is to provide a set of computer automated procedures for management and monitoring of warehouse inventory with the target of minimizing cost, delivery time and streamlining warehouses processes. The primary feature of the application is that it allows for a system of centralized management of various warehousing tasks mainly inventory control, tracking, and the location of stock items and not function as separate departments, bringing unity among the processes. WMS may work on their own as a single application or be an integrated part of a larger system. In the recent times, cloud based warehouse management system is becoming more and more popular, it is a web-based software as a service (SaaS) model utilizing enterprise cloud technology. The benefits of cloud based WMS software over standalone systems and ERP based solutions, include better flexibility, disaster recovery, scalability, and security. Cloud computing also offers users the ability to receive automatic software updates without additional capital expenditures, providing better technology competitiveness. Thus to conclude, the benefits of a comprehensive warehouse management system include reduced delivery time, increased inventory accuracy, improved customer service, greater space utilization, increased warehouse productivity and reduced labor cost.
Globalization
Globalization is the integration of national economies through trade, investment, capital flow, labor migration, and technology. It represents the global integration of international trade, investment, information technology and cultures. Government policies designed to facilitate economies domestically and internationally to boost development in poorer countries and raise standards of living for their people is what drives globalization across the world. Through globalization, organizations can gain a competitive advantage from lower operating costs, and access to new raw materials and additional global markets. Multinational corporations can manufacture, buy and sell goods worldwide without much hindrance if they follow the set rules and regulations. For example, a Japanese car manufacturer can manufacture auto parts in several developing countries, ship the parts to another country for assembly and sell the finished cars to any nation. Globalization primarily results from the removal of barriers between national economies to encourage the flow of goods, services, capital, and labor. While the lowering or removal of tariffs and quotas that restrict free and open trade among nations has helped globalize the world economy, but at the same time improved transportation and communication technologies have had the strongest impact on accelerating the pace of globalization throughout the world. Organizations must recognize that their success depends on efficiency and scalability of being able to mobilize global resources and reach world markets at a fast pace and it is the key to growing businesses in the 21st Century.
Logistics
Logistics is the overall process of managing how resources are acquired, stored and transported to their final destination. Logistics management involves identifying prospective distributors and suppliers, and determining their effectiveness and accessibility. The term is used widely in the business sector, particularly by organizations in the manufacturing sectors to refer to how resources are handled and moved along the supply chain. The primary objective of logistics management is to have the right amount of a resource at the right time, getting it to the appropriate location in proper condition and delivering it to the correct internal or external client. Proper logistics ensure the timely fulfillment of each customer order, making sure resources move quickly and efficiently from one section of the supply chain to the next. . Poor logistics leads to untimely deliveries, failure to meet the needs of clientele and ultimately causes the business to suffer. For instance, in the natural gas industry, logistics involves managing the pipelines, trucks, storage facilities and distribution centers that handle oil as it is transformed along the supply chain. An efficient supply chain and effective logistical procedures are essential to reduce costs and to maintain and increase efficiency. The various important factors responsible for effective logistics management and network optimization are proper planning of the processes, adopting modern automation techniques, value relations among the employees in the supply chain by bonding with each and every one, implement proper warehouse management, involving efficient transportation system throughout, integrate proper measurement tools, analyze feedback and improvise accordingly, etc.
