Explanation / Answer

16)Answer:

Net Neutrality:

Network neutrality (net neutrality) is a principle that asserts that governments and Internet service providers should not place restrictions on consumers' access to networks participating in the Internet. In general, net neutrality prevents restrictions on content, platforms, sites and equipment, and modes of communication.

Network neutrality may also be known as Internet neutrality.

Network neutrality deals with the three things: limited discrimination, non-discrimination and limited timing. For example, if two or more users share the same subscription level, then it is possible for them to use the Internet at same level of access.

The following are the major concerns of network neutrality:

Importance:

Net neutrality, or open Internet, is the principle that Internet service providers (ISPs) should give consumers access to all legal content and applications on an equal basis, without favoring some sources or blocking others

Airtel Zero is a new platform offered by Airtel, wherein the end users will pay nothing to access some specific websites, gaming portals and eCommerce portals. There would be no data charges for those customers who opt for Zero Airtel, and chose to access only a few specific sites.Recently India’s eCommerce giant Flipkart signed a deal with mobile data provider Airtel, named as Airtel Zero. The deal ensures that if you are accessing the Flipkart App through Airtel, you won’t have to pay for the net usage. It means you are paying to use Snapdeal, Jabong and thousands other small E commerce websites but not flipkart. That kills a fair competition. As a consumer you are loosing the opportunity to fairly compare the price and product of two ecomerece web sites.

You as a customer will have access to only those portals and websites which have made arrangement with Airtel. As per reports, Airtel will collaborate with 80-100 Internet companies, including top 2-3 ecommerce portals. Besides these, you won’t be able to access any website or app without paying extra and more data charges.

In case Reddit or Dailymotion decides to opt out of Airtel Zero, there is no way you can access these portals besides moving out of Airtel platform. Google, a part of the telecom lobby Cellular Operators Association of India and a serial violator of Net Neutrality in India, will be free. With all the popular, favourite sites free, they’ll choose free. They’ll have to think before buying a data pack to access the freedom of the open web.
So, two Internets. Free and paid.

If you are a new business trying to break into the internet. You will have no option but to suck up to these telecom giants. Flipkart might have millions of dollars to pay to Airtel, but the new people won’t . That makes it extremely difficult for a new player to enter the market. Even Flipkart would not have existed if Amazon signed a similar deal with Airtel 5 years back.

But these are just consumer website. The real fear lies in the indirect censorship. Internet is a great equalizer and in it’s true sense democratic. You have a voice, you can raise it. If companies start differential pricing for news websites, opinion websites, only the voice with highest money is gonna be heard.

Think of what the future might look like. You cannot share an article without paying 1 buck per share because it originated from a certain website but you can share another website for free. That small website you liked that wrote reviews about certain cars? No you cannot access them any more without paying tipple the charges because the car companies are paying your Internet provider. The small political party who were forming opinions about something you really care, their website is loading slowly , because the big parties have made a pact with the internet service providers
