Question
PLEASE EXPLAIN AND SHOW WORK
Unpolarized light with initial intensity of Io goes through two linear polarizers. The first polarizer has a transmission axis at an angle of +75? with respect to the vertical and the second polarizer has a transmission axis at an angle of +15? with respect to the vertical.
32) What is the final intensity of light?
33) If a third polarizer, with transmission axis at 60? with respect to the vertical, where should it be placed to minimize the final intensity of light?
Explanation / Answer
Number 32
The unpolarized light will go through the first polarizer and lose half its intensity.
The between the first and second, the angle is 75 - 15 = 60 degrees
Apply I = Iocos^2(60)
I/Io = .25
So .5(.25) = .125
Thus .125(Io)
Number 33
Place it behind the +15 polarizer so you have maximum angle difference. Between 15 and 60 would give you an angle of 45 degrees. That would give you the minimum intensity.
It would be .0625 of the initial in case you wanted to know.
