Question

Deals with current and magnetic fields. I have no idea where to start with this one-any help would be greatly appreciated!

A long horizontal wire carries a current of IT = 43.5 A. A second wire (I), made of 2.10 mm diameter copper wire and parallel to the first but L = 16.2 cm below it, is held in suspension magnetically, as seen in the figure below. (This means the upwards magnetic force on that lower wire is just large enough to hold it up against its own weight) What is the current in the lower wire (Use right as the positive direction)? (The density of copper is 8.9E3 kg/m3.) Answer: (submit All Answers

Explanation / Answer

the force per unit length is

F/l = (u_o x I1 x I2/2pi x L)

where F is force,I is length of conductor,L is distance between the conductors,u_o = 4pi x 10^-7 T.m/A,I1 = 43.5 A and I2 is unknown current

solving for I2
