Question

Please review the following materials, these are videos that you need to view (if needed a couple of times). The focus of the learing should be on understanding the concepts and not memorising small details. Also use this for learning some basic terminology. After you view it and get comfortable with understanding basic terminology and the concepts,

please post a small paragraph in the Discussion board

OSI model provides us the standard of reference for networking.

Packet Switches are everywhere within the network, the network consists of switches and lines (copper or optical fiber)

Explanation / Answer

OSI model and the explanation about the switches

OSI model is a reference model which is very helpful for the networking people. It is very easy to understand and useful unlike
most of the people think. Most of the people consider OSI model as troublesome and tedious to understand. However, it is not the case.
OSI model is a layered architecture which divide the functions and operations on the network into different layers. This kind of layered arrangement
makes the understanding the concepts and the troubleshooting easy. For example, if the communication between two computers fail, it would be tedious to look at all the
functions that are active on the network if there is no layered architecture. OSI model is the solution for these kind of problems
It divides and arranges the functionalities of the network into different layers based on the level of abstraction such as the functionalities that are closest to the user
to the functionalities that are related to the network.
The arrangement is as follows:
Application - consists the protocols related to the end user
Presentation - first level where the operating systems gets involved in the communication
Session - helps arranging sessions between two end-user computers
Transport - gives idea about how big the data should be, to send it on to the network
Network - establishes a logical connection between the computers
Datalink - links the physical computers to the logical connection
Physical - equips the network with physical connections with the help of cables such as CAT-5, Coax etc

Coming the Switch, it is a networking device that operates at layer2. Unlike everyone thinks, switches are not just the devices that
send data from one port to other, they also have the thinking ability. The switches came into existence to overcome the disadvantages
of the hubs. Hubs tend to broadcast the packets received by them to all the devices that are connected in the network which may lead
to collisions. Though collision detection algorithms exists, they seem not practical if the network consists of more than 100 devices.
Unlike of hubs, the switches have the thinking ability. They learn the devices that are connected to the network and just send data to only
devices.
Apart from this feature, there will be managed switches which can make hard coding available. There will be unmanaged switches
which will not have the hard coding feature.
The other features and advantages with the switches are:

1. Quality of service - prioritise the packets like VoIP is high priority.
2. Power on Ethernet - both power and data can be on the same cable.

The things that has to be checked on swithces:

1.Back plan to identify the capacity of the switch
2. which ports are power on ethernet
