Question
Oh my gosh…golly gee willikers…you received a call from your company’s Senior Vice President. She heard about your solid understanding of company processes and state/local laws. You being well spoken, well dressed and a Webster University graduate, she asked you to prepare an explanation describing your company’s generic development process. You are to identify the label of each phase and explain each phase’ input and output. Lastly, she asked that you use the company’s most popular product as an example for the briefing. The product is…ready…ready…here it comes – bacon bandages.
Explanation / Answer
Generic development process:
In any generic product development process the input is the mission statement and the output is the final product launch.
A mission statement is a statement which describes the type of products or services offered by the business, it talks about the market that they are targeting and the location of their operation. A product launch is a process of launching or introducing the final product in the market. It is a process of publicising or creating awareness about the new product . It is like an introduction given about the product to the market when it is ready for sales.
The product development process starts with the input ( mission statement) and ends with the output (product launch). But between the input and the output are many steps that are employed for the production of the product.
A generic product development process look like the following: mission statment--> concept development --> system level design--> detail design-->testing--> production ramp up--> product launch.
Once the mission statement is ready the next step would be the concept development. First the needs of the market are identified and a list of possible products is prepared, assessed and one idea or product is selected for development.
Next step would be the system level design where the product is sub divided into smaller componenets. Here, the subsystems are defined and matters of geometric layout, functional specification and process flow diagram(output) are prepared. Then comes the Detail design stage where it is specified where the parts are to be purchased from ( the suppliers are identified), a process plan is prepared and tooling is done for all parts within the production system and control document (output) is prepared.
Then, Testing and refinement of the product is done. Here, many versions of the same product are made and evaluated. It is preparation of a prototype to check if it will work well, and meet the expectations of the the customers. These are prepared to also check if there is any fault and what chages need to be done before final production starts.
Further, production ramp up is done to train the workforce. Here the products that are produced are supplied to selected customers to check if there are any flaws still remaining and changes are made if any. once the product passes its transition stage it is made available to the market through a product launch.
Product : Bacon bandages
mission statement: We exist to kill your pain.
concept development: bacon bandages, sensor bandages , each is evaluated and one is selected. In this case bacon bandage is selected.
system level design : a detail layout is prepared for the production of bacon strips, adhesive, packaging, medicine, gauze,
detail design: deciding who the suppliers would be for each material required for the production.
testing and refinement: prototypes are prepared with various combination of each material that goes into the production of the bandage.
production ramp up: a drill like process where workers/ employees are trained for the production of the bandage and the bandage is tested for any flaws or changes. The flaws are rectifies after feedback from selected customers to whom this badage was supplied.
product launch: the bacon bandage is launched in the market through channels like the pharmacy, hospitals, online portals .
