Consider the following circuit-switched network. There are 4 circuits on each link. Label the four switches A, B, C, and D, going in the clockwise direction. a. What is the maximum number of simultaneous connections that can be in progress at any one time in this network? b. Suppose chat all connections are between switches A and C. What is the maximum number of simultaneous connections that can be in progress? c. Suppose we want to make four connections between switches A and C, and another four connections between switches B and D. Can we route these calls through the four links to accommodate all eight connections? If yes/no, why?

Explanation / Answer

a) As seen from diagram, betwee any two connected switches, there can be max four connection. As there are 4 such pairs (A-B, B-C, C-D, D-A), we can have maxium 16 (4 x 4) connections.

b) Four connections can pass through the switch A (upper right hand corner) and another 4 connections through C (lower left hand corner). Thus there are total 8 connections.

c) Yes, we can route these calls through the four links to accomodate all eight connections. For the connections between A and C, we route two connections through B and two connections through D. For the connections between B and D, we route two connections through A and two connections through C. In this way we have atmost 4 connection passing thorugh any link and have total of 8 connections.
