3. In the paper, the average amount of vitamin C for several fruits and vegetables were reported. The value was reported as the average of three measurements t standard deviation. Sample Vitamin C (mg 100 g of sample Black currant 184.36 t 0.37 Red grapefruit 21.43 t 0.62 15.90 t 0.68 (2 pts. If the measurement of red grapefruit was made 100 times, about how many measurements would fall in the range 21.43 t 0.31. See table 4-1 in your text to answer this question.

Explanation / Answer

For the grape fruit,

mean = 21.43

SD = 0.62

So, the range 21.43 +/- 0.31 corresponds to half a standard deviation on each side

Thus,

Z- score = 0.5

Thus, we need

P ( -0.5 < Z < 0.5)

= 2 P ( 0 < Z < 0.5)

= 2 * 0.1915

= 0.3830

Thus, 38.30% of observations would lie in the interval i.e 38 or 39 observations are expected to be within the given range.

Hope this helps.
