please answer the following questions
I find many odd and quirky things about this theory For example Northouse says: leadership generates motivation when it increases the number and kin so pa o that ol owers rece e m e·work. oen ha seem strange and limited? I would think it might have more to do with the accuracy of the payoff-providing the workers with what they really want. By way of example, I was teaching in Halifax, Nova Scotia back in the 1990's. A conversation revealed that a gentleman's workers at a local shipyard did NOT want to work during Thanksgiving for holiday pay-they expressed a definite preference for compensatory days off instead. They were looking to "bank" more time off at Christmas time instead of banking more money at Thanksgiving Additionally, Northouse assert: "ln addition, supportive leaders treat followers as equals..." Question #1: What could go wrong with treating followers "as equals"? This begs the larger question: Should you be friends with your subordinates? Northouse observes: "Similarly, it suggests that leaders should be participative when followers need control and that leaders should be achievement oriented when followers need to excel." Question #2: When, exactly, would you want your followers "not to excel"? Don't you want them to excel all of the time? Shouldn't you be motivating your followers to excel ALL of the time?Explanation / Answer
Answer.
1. Being friendly with subordinates is a good thing, but considering employees as equal as a leader doesn't differentiate leader from them. Leaders are the facilitators, motivators who help the employees to enhance their productivity and personal growth. They cannot be treated as leaders though they support the team and management, but there are power and authority criteria which separates leaders from followers.
Leaders must be participative to help the team feel comfortable and fear free, and provide certain authorities to help employees to make some of the decision at their own. But, when their are resources and time constraints, proper control is must required. Otherwise, employees can be provided with a free work environment where they can excel in their work. Yes I agree that leaders nuts be achievement oriented, but, considering the employees need and their difficulty. He must keep them motivated and support them to help them reach desired performance and to align their personal goals with the goals of organisation.
2. Yes, a leader must see to it that his followers excel all of the time, he can do that by keeping the employees motivated, by rewarding and recognising outperforming members, and helping with training and counseling the underperforming members to boost their confidence, this will help them enhance their efficiency and effectiveness, enhance their self esteem, make them feel they are important part of the firm and increase their morale.
