Question

Why would a scientist want to use gels composed of differentpercentages of acrylamide (i.e. 8% or 16%)? Our lab was Estimation of protens molecular weight by SDSpage. Electrophoretic separations of biological macromolcules arealmost always perfromed in gels made of porous insoluble materialsuch as acrylamide Why would a scientist want to use gels composed of differentpercentages of acrylamide (i.e. 8% or 16%)? Explanation / Answer

Different percentages of gels yield different densities of the gel making them either more porous or less porous. Depending on the size of the molecules you are working with this would dictate what percentage you would use. If your gel is too easy for the molecules to get through or not easy enough your results will be incorrect.
