A specific feature can be added to a computer with the help of a plug in. In short they povide some extra functionality like to allow watch some video online, see flash animations, run Java applets etc. So, through them we can provide costumisations to the browser. Through these plug-in, we can add some extra content which was originaly not available in the browser. So, they also improve the user interaction with the browser. e.g: Flash plug-in helps us to watch videos online, Adobe Acrobat Reader to open pdf online, antivirus softwares to prevent from malwares.

There are many operating systems like windowns, linux, mac Os. So, all the apps build are different for different platform. But now a days, web applications are being build such that they do not depend on the operating system or the platform they are being run on. So,in short they are trying to make web as a common platform for every softwares.
