This discussion has three parts. 

The Internet has created new ways to do business for organizations with much less capital planning as opposed to the high capital needs of traditional brick and mortar organizations. Based on this, answer the following questions:

How should management and leadership address each type of business? 


Describe the organizational structure of 1 traditional and 1 online retailer, identifying a management or leadership challenge for each type of retailer. 


Are the challenges basically the same or different? In what ways are they the same, or how are they different?


Explanation / Answer

According to the management, traditional retail business is defined as the selling goods to the customer's through different means of selling say door to door selling, selling at retail shops which requires the high cash requirement to set up stores and selling through agents etc. This type of business requires the uses of leadership skills.

As per leadership definition, traditional brick and mortar stores requires the high use of leadership skills to increase skills. The important requirement of the business is to have a leader who can interact with customer, lead the team and increase the sales.

Online stores:

According to the management online stores are e-commerce website, all the items put to sale are displayed in the picture on online webiste, customer can choose the product as per their choice and order. It requires very less use of management interference.

As per leadership online retail stores are the stores which requires less leadership requirement as there is limited number of members in the team. The team appointed is for packaging and delivery of the product.

Organization structure for traditional stores:

This includes centralized operations, store operations and regional operations.

Centralized operations of traditional retail stores includes the management of human resources related number of sales man to be appointed as the counter for selling, number of persons needed for tracking records of good coming in and going out, cash counter, preparing ledger etc.

Store operations:

Store operations includes maintain records of the stock that is daily procured and sold.

Regional operations:

It includes distribution and warehousing. It involves maintaining records of each regional activity, regions wise.

Organization structure of online retailer:

The online retailer structure is less cumbersome as compared to brick and mortar stores. For example: Amazon.

These type of organisation requires website (IT department) to manage it's website. The website should be user friendly who attract customer and make it easy to use.

The store operations requires for mananaging day to day records of order generated and out for delivery.

Management or leadership challenge:

In traditional form of retailing mangement challenge is with planning and manageging human resource while leadership challenge includes the leading team who should be motivated for 8 hours work and selling the product.

Online retail firm faces less challenge in terms of leadership than management.

Management requires stores operations and maintenance of website.

The challenges for the both firm are different as traditional retailer's are most related with the stores and human resources while online stores are with maintaining website and delivery of product.
