This article discusses the role of leadership in bringing a successful and positive change in an organization. The authors cite the example of Nokia failure due to their incapability to adapt to market trends and lack of effective leadership. Nokia lost its market position because they did not change. The authors discuss the traits of leadership like trust, communication, teamwork, and various other factors in effecting a successful change in an organization. The barriers to change are discussed. The article concludes by stating that leaders must encourage and motivate the employees to bring a successful change in the organization by developing a suitable organization culture. Leadership plays a key role in the development of company vision, mission, goals and objectives with employee participation and driving them towards attaining them to bring a successful change.

The article is a literature review of several articles on leadership and management in medical databases over a fifteen year time period. The authors identify various courses and training programs of leadership that enables doctors and healthcare managers to transform into effective leaders. The main skills identified as a result of the study include emotional intelligence, industry knowledge and problem-solving skills that are developed in the leadership training courses. Leaders lead people and have followers while managers follow instructions and perform daily routine activities. Leaders initiate change and develop the vision and mission of an organization while managers follow the leaders and supervise the employees.

The gist of the analysis of a leader include Confucius – leader serves people, Plato – leader must be wise, Machiavelli – leader should possess good virtue, Carlyle – leader is a great man, Zaleznik – leader exerts power and influences people to follow, Kotter – leader moves or transforms a group, Bass – leadership is an effective interaction among members and Drucker – leaders have followers. The author cites the example of Churchill leadership during the World War I but was not reelected as people thought Churchill was not the right person to reconstruct the nation. Hence context plays a critical role in leadership. Leadership has three main players including a leader, followers and the context. Leadership is a process where people elect a person as a leader based on the context.

The authors review 91 publications on authentic leadership and study the evolution of leadership. The research gives an overview of the various leadership styles, traits and qualities of a leader. Charismatic or transformational leadership is concluded as the most effective authentic leadership style in the article. Leaders emerge like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates in the IT field due to the need for new and innovative products. Innovation fuels leadership and an authentic leader is one who is capable of transforming that innovation into a vision for the organization. The leader must be capable enough to persuade and influence the employees to align with the organization vision and work towards attaining it developing values and culture in the organization.
