Question

A manager wants to assign tasks to workstations as efficiently as possible, and achieve an hourly output of 4 units. The department uses a working time of 56 minutes per hour. Assign the tasks shown in the accompanying precedence diagram (times are in minutes) to workstations using the following rules: a. In order of most following tasks. Tiebreaker: greatest positional weight. Work Station Tasks 1(Click to select) (Click to select I (Click to select) (Click to select) b. In order of greatest positional weight. Work Station Tasks (Click to select) 11 , cick to select ll (Click to select) IV (Click to select) c. What is the efficiency? (Round your answer to 2 decimal places. Omit the"%" sign in your response.) Efficiency

Explanation / Answer

Required cycle time = 56 minutes ( i.e. 1 hour ) / 4 units = 14 minutes

Total duration of all tasks a to i

= 3 + 2 +4 + 7 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 9 + 5 minutes

Minimum number of workstations required

= Total duration of all tasks / Required cycle time

= 45/14

= 3.21 ( 4rounded to next higher whole number )

Answer to question # a:

Activities which can be arranged in descending order of most following tasks :

Activities which can be arranged in descending order of positional weights as follows:

F = 5 + 6 + 4 + 9 + 5 = 29

D = 7 + 4 + 9 + 5 = 25

G = 6 + 4 + 9 + 5 = 24

A = 3 + 2 + 4 + 9 + 5 = 23

B = 2 + 4 + 9 + 5 = 20

C, e = 4 + 9 + 5 = 18

H = 9 + 5 = 14

I = 5

Based on above , allocation of tasks as per rule stipulated in question #a as follows :

Workstation

Total duration ( Mins)

1

F, g

5 + 6 = 11

2

A, b,c

3 + 2 + 4 = 9

3

D, e

7 + 4 = 11

4

H, i

9 + 5 = 14

Answer to question # b :

7 + 4 = 11

3

4

H, i

9 + 5 = 14

Answer to question # c:

Efficiency

= Total duration of all tasks / ( actual number of workstations x cycle time) x 100

= 45/ ( 4 x 14 ) x 100

= 45/56 x 100

= 80.36 % ( rounded to 2 decimal places )
