Question

Scenario:

After School Counts is a not-for-profit organization in a large urban city. The mission of the organization is to provide services for under-served youth in the community. Services currently include an afterschool program, Saturday arts and sports activities, and academic tutoring. Juan, Coordinator for New Programs, has been asked by his supervisor to start a counseling program for youth in the neighborhood. Juan has a background in youth counseling, but is not quite sure how to organize such a program.

Members of After School Counts are:

She has been with the organization for 7 years and serves as the Executive Director. She has a Master’s degree in Child Psychology and has lived in the community for 10 years. Previously, she worked in a local middle school as a youth guidance counselor.

Juan: He has been with the organization for 4 years and serves as the Coordinator for New Programs. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services and has lived in the community for 11 years. Previously, he worked as a youth counselor for an alternative high school in the community.

Questions for written response:

Assess what you believe is the key problem presented in the scenario. Using examples from the case above, discuss the steps you would take to organize the youth program. What suggestions do you have for Juan for setting up the program?

There is funding available for the program, but a formal document must be submitted to get the money. Provide a 2–3 paragraph memo to the Executive Director which describes the following:

1). Overview of the program

2). Ways it will serve youth in community

3). Why After School Counts should offer such a program

Explanation / Answer

Overview

Programme should clearly mention the purpose and age group to which it will serve. In this case youth can have age range from 14 to 35. Speakers of the programme should be mentioned in the phamplate of the programme information. All the team members are having experience in the counselling should be there for the programme which will assist Juan and will improve the diversity of the programme content.

Counselling can include career development, sexual transmitted diseases counseling, addiction counseling, marital and family counseling and other range of areas for the counseling apart from the fields which team members are specialized with.

Obvious benefits of the programme improved health, life style, way of thinking, new career paths and more social behavior of the youth towards community.

Why?

Since group members are counselor in some of the field with good years of experience in the field, it is quite easy for the After School to manage such programme. Arranging such programme will bring the wide expertise of member to one platform and can bring the benefit to the community. This will also provide distinct identity to the After School from such programme and give rise to the many such ocassions.
