Question
The next day at SLS found everyone in technical support busy restoring computer systems to their former state and installing new virus and worm control software.Amy found herself learning how to re-install desktop computer operating systems and applications as SLS made a heroic effort to recover from the attack of previous day. question. 1. Do u think this event was caused by and insider or outsider ? Explain your answer. 2 Other than installing virus and worm control software, what can SLS do to prepare for the next incident? 3. do you think this attack was the result of a virus or a worm? Explain your answer.
Explanation / Answer
1. Do u think this event was caused by and insider or outsider ? Explain your answer.
-> Not necessary it will be an outsider. It can be insider as well. If some corrupted files are opened or external drives are inserted then it hampers the OS. Even the power coming through LAN(if connected) but mostly OS are harmed by outsider only.
2 Other than installing virus and worm control software, what can SLS do to prepare for the next incident?
-> A good backup sytem to enable a quick backup when problem is solved. Even monitoring of the resources can be handy. Timely updates of OS and effective filtering usage like proper policies of Firewalls and filters.
3. Do you think this attack was the result of a virus or a worm? Explain your answer.
-> Not excatly. Everytime it is not necessary that when OS restart fails it is due to virus/malaware etc.
There can be other reasons as well for dektops not taking restart like :
Network outage:
If desktops are connected via same lan using a switch then due to some unwanted power interuption can harm as well.
Firewalls and Filters :
Software firewalls and filters attempt to block or alter network traffic using the same operating system and CPU resources as applications. This can be problematic for moving data at high speeds when there are multiple layers, such as combining firewall, content filter, router, and network address translation software.
OS Upgrade Failure:
If the updates of the OS gets interupted then it also hampers the OS.
If we have a USB drive plugged in:
This could occur happen if some systems try to boot off external media before the main internal drive. Unplug any external drivesand take out any media.
Lost Data Or Accidental Delete :
If the drive containg OS is formated, OS gets removed or lost which result in OS failure.
Other Traffic :
Though not a component of the network, third-party traffic flow often also hampers.
