Question

•   13. Power, Influence, Persuasion As you likely know, UMASS Boston’s Master Plan calls for major changes over the next decades. The Master Plan includes the construction of the new science complex, other academic buildings and, for the first time new dormitories. These plans are not without controversy. Immediate neighbors to the campus have expressed concern about the impact of many students living here Columbia Point. Some members of the UMass alumni community have questioned whether transitioning to more of a residential campus is appropriate, safe, or desirable for UMass Boston. City approval is also necessary to go ahead with the construction. The City is also aware that UMass is a large employer and creates substantial revenue for the city, yet they must also be sensitive to neighborhood concerns. Furthermore, the planning and approval process is such that a well-organized neighborhood group might be able to successfully sway city councilors such that parts of the plan may not be approved. Furthermore must gain on-going support from alumni who are necessary to provide funding in support of this effort. Imagine that you are EITHER: A. publicly representing UMass

OR B. advising UMass on how to gain support for this endeavor

OR C. Chancellor Motley, acting as a champion of this endeavor

•   Explain how you would be effectively persuasive to neighbors, city officials, and alums persuasive citing examples course concepts

•   Contrast Persuasion from Power and Influence and consider whether the actor(s) in question were exercising power, leadership or both.

Explanation / Answer

I image myself as publicly representing UMass. In order to effectively persuasive to neighbors, city officials and alums. I would prepare a list of benefits which has been created by UMass to the city and for the neighbor’s resident in the city. Proceed with the advantages and merits of the UMass master plan as it includes the construction of the new science complex, other academic buildings and, for the first-time new dormitories.

The advantages of the new science complexes are that they would help in the development of the students and the neighbor residing nearby too. For the development and growth someone has to compromise somethings. It would deliver the speech which would have the main focus on the merits of the UMass plan and demerits too but with less focus and the reasons also implied how to change the demerits into merits.

Contrast persuasion is required when the plan has to implement. So, the Power and Influence has to be implied. But here they didn’t imply power and influences. They are working on the leadership skills of them. As the leader have the quality to lead the people and plan accordingly. So here leadership approach has been applied. UMass has the Master plan and according to the master plan they want to proceed. As there are city counselor which may reject it or reject some part of it, but still UMass didn’t applied power. If the Power has been applied then the results may change from the path what they want to achieve.
