Question

You have been asked to replace the company’s aging telephone system with a new voice-over-IP system. The network administrator doesn’t want UDP traffic on his data network. The telephone system manager is unsure if regular data traffic will interfere with the new telephone traffic. Describe how you can use VLANs, network segmentation and traffic prioritization across the company’s Ethernet network to provide sufficient bandwidth to the telephone system without significantly interfering with the data network operation.

Explanation / Answer

Way of cutting down a larger network into smaller ones is by implementing VLANs. VLANs allows segmentation and provides organisational flexibility within a inter network. They provides grouping of devices within a LAN. A group of devices within a VLAN communicate as if they were attached to the same wire. VLANs are based on logical connections. They allow an admin to segment networks based on function, team, or application, without considering the physical location of the user.

Traffic prioritisation requires certain amount of bandwidth in order to keep the conversations clear and free of disruptions. Bandwidth is the amount of information which your internet connection can send and receive in a certain period of time. First step is to use an online speed test to find out what is maximum upload stream and download stream. Bandwidth is normally measured in kbps or kilobits per second.
